What is Oxygen Therapy?

Oxygen Therapy (also known as Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT), or Oxygen Treatment) involves breathing pure oxygen (98%) in a pressurized barochamber. It is a well-established treatment for many conditions and the management of a wide range of symptoms.

Conditions treated include (but not exclusively):

MS, ME/CFS, Skin Grafts, Migraine, Stroke, Chronic Regional Pain, Osteomyelitis, Sensorineural Hearing Loss, Crohn's disease, Decreased immune function, Wound healing, Fibromyalgia, Crush Injuries, Cerebral Palsy, Cluster headaches, Traumatic Brain Injury, Anaemia, Lyme Disease, Radionecrosis, Sports injuries/recovery, Post Cancer Radiotherapy, Diabetic leg ulcers; Long Covid.

Where does it happen?

In our barochamber - we increase air pressure up to 2 times higher than normal. Breathing 98% oxygen through a mask in the chamber allows your lungs to process much more oxygen than usual.

What does it do?

Your body's tissues require enough oxygen to work properly, especially when injured. Oxygen Therapy boosts the amount of oxygen your blood can carry. Extra oxygen in your blood helps fight bacteria and stimulates the release of growth factors and stem cells, promoting healing.

What does it feel like?

During Oxygen Therapy the increased air pressure will create a temporary feeling of fullness in your ears, like what you might feel in an airplane or at a high elevation. You can relieve that feeling by yawning or swallowing.

How long does it take?

For most conditions, an Oxygen Therapy session lasts approximately one and half hours.

To benefit from Oxygen Therapy, you will need a number of sessions. How many is dependent upon your medical condition and the recommended treatment protocol.

What is a treatment protocol?

A treatment protocol sets limits on safe exposure to pressurized oxygen, including atmospheric pressure, treatment duration, and number of sessions. These protocols aim to maximize the benefits and outcomes of therapy. Initial treatment may involve 10-40 daily consecutive sessions, but some conditions may require more frequent or varied sessions.

What pressure do you provide?

We run three different pressurized sessions: 1.5ata (16.5ft). 1.75ata (24ft) and 2ata (33ft). The pressure and protocol duration will be dependent on your specific condition and symptoms.

How can I get started?

Register at https://form.jotform.com/mstclothian/registration-neurological-condition for Neurological Conditions, and https://form.jotform.com/232503458839059for other General Health Conditions: We will assess your suitability for this treatment, based on a review of your condition, symptoms, and medication. If you are suitable, then a member of our team will give you a call to discuss your protocol and booking arrangements.

How much does it cost?

Please see https://wearecompass.org.uk/oxygen-therapy.

Are there any side-effects?

Oxygen chambers like ours have an outstanding safety record. The biggest risk is barotrauma. This is most likely to affect the ears but if you are having any issues we give you plenty of time to clear your ears and minimise risk.
