information SERVICE DETAILS

Aiki Jutsu is one of Japan’s oldest and most effective martial arts. Our club, Muromachi Koto Ryu has been established in Edinburgh for over 20 years and has been in Carrickvale Community Centre since 2004. We are a small club with links to a European organsation which allows us access to some of the worlds best martial artists.

We have both male and female instructors taking all classes. This martial art has no maximum age limits – our students’ ages range from 5 - 80 years of age.

Kids Training

Junior Samurai classes are open to all children aged 5 years and over. Training children is different from older youths and adults in that for the youngest martial artists, training consists of games to help teach some of the basic skills.

Children learn to land correctly on the mat as well as forward and backwards rolls, blocks and target practise.

We spend time training the children to strike correctly only to ensure that they can defend these properly and effectively.

The Junior Samurai receive regular rewards such as stickers and badges to help motivation as well as belts when they pass their gradings. Gradings are usually done discretely so that nerves do not play a part for the children and they love getting a surprise announcement at the end of the training session!
Children also receive regular news letters – Samurai News with details of recent achievements or information about classes.

Each year we run an International Seminar in which the junior classes receive training from some of the other instructors from all over Europe. These are always well attended and are great fun!

Adult Training

As a beginner, adults are often wary about starting a Martial Art due to movie style ideas of flying kicks and back flips! Whilst we would love to get you doing this, Aiki Jutsu does not require you to ever be able to do this!

Using your opponents momentum and movement, even the newest of beginners can throw, pin or disarm their training partner. As you progress through the gradings, confidence grows and the techniques become second nature making it ideal as self-defence.

More experienced martial artists can train at their own level learning and applying more complex fighting techniques.

Traditional wooden weapons such as jo (stick), bokken (samurai sword) and tanto (knife) are used to simulate modern day weapon attacks.

Aiki Jutsu is an ideal martial art for women as it does not require you to be stronger than your opponent to succeed. It teaches escape techniques as well as strikes and pins to immobilize your opponent.
