Safe & Sound offers Scottish landlords and deaf tenants equal access to information and advice on the property rental market.

Know your rights as a tenant

Our BSL videos make information around property rental accessible for deaf people. Get guidance on deposits, and what to do in the event of a dispute. Check out our range of BSL videos at https://www.deafaction.org/services/safe-sound.

Expert advice

We can offer expert advice on renting, from communicating with your landlord, to deposits and disputes. Our team also can advise on safety and security measures for deaf tenants, including guidance on smoke detectors, Co2 alarms and doorbells.

Interpreter access

We can provide funded BSL/English interpreters (https://www.deafaction.org/services/communication-interpreting-agency/bsl-english-interpreters) to improve communication between tenants and landlords.

Interpreters can help at every stage of the rental process, from advertising properties, agreeing terms, responding to emergency repairs, through to disputes and problem solving.

Specialist equipment

If you are deaf and rent your home, our team of expert engineers can supply and install specialist equipment. Our equipment and installation services are designed to improve your independence and quality of life at home.

Are you a landlord or letting agent?

We can help you support deaf tenants

Our consultancy service provides advice for private landlords on how to make their properties safe for deaf tenants. We can also provide interpreters to improve communication with between landlords and tenants.

Workshops

Join our free deaf awareness workshops and get advice on how to support your deaf and hard of hearing tenants. Our workshops are inclusive for both hearing and deaf landlords.

Learn how to make properties safe and secure for deaf tenants. Our workshops can help landlords and letting agents develop an understanding of the barriers deaf people face and what solutions are available.

We’ll help you:

- Improve your communication skills with deaf tenants
- Understand the importance of accessible information
- Engage with BSL/English interpreters to communicate with your tenants find out about specialist safety equipment and security measures for deaf tenants
