This is a 7 week course which aims to give all parents/carers the chance to explore emotional health and wellbeing and consider how they can best promote it in themselves and their children. Drawing on the latest research it helps explain why parents’ actions make a difference to their children’s emotional wellbeing and future positive mental health.

Are you the parent or carer of children between birth and 11 years old?

This 7 session course aims to improve your understanding about factors which influence positive mental health and emotional well-being. It will support you to better promote emotional well-being in yourself and your children.

Sessions are for 2 hours each over 7 weeks.

- Introduction examines what emotional health & well-being
- Why do kids do that? explores some of the research into brain development and how stress affects the brain.
- What’s love got to do with it? introduces attachment theory and how relationships in early life can have an impact on well-being in the long.
- Cotton wool kids looks at resilience and what parents can do to support their child to manage life’s up and downs.
- Staying connected discusses what empathy is and how can we support children’s development of empathy through effective communication and role modelling.
- What makes us, us? suggests how the childhood experiences of parents can shape their behaviour as adults and how they can look after their own emotional well-being.
- 21st Century childhood explores media influences on children and reviews the main ingredients to developing resilient, emotionally healthy children.

Raising Children with Confidence, sometimes called RCWC, is an affirming course which pulls together many of the latest findings and evidence from neuroscience, psychology and social science to explain what influences children’s emotional well-being and why what parents do makes such a difference. It recognises the uniqueness of every family and, through increasing knowledge and allowing you to share your experiences with other parents and carers, will support you to make choices and changes which are relevant to your family.

Courses are free to families whose children aged from birth to 11 years old attend school in Edinburgh and take place in venues across the city including early years settings, primary schools and community venues.

What if you don’t live in Edinburgh? An increasing number of local authorities throughout Scotland are now also offering RCWC courses to local families.

Wednesday 9:30am - 11:30am, creche spaces available.
