Hillwalking Group

1st Saturday of each month

Brunstane Road North

Portobello and Joppa Parish Church Hillwalking group was founded in 2003 to offer a programme of organised walks throughout the year. Everyone is welcome, whether or not part of Church life. There is no membership entitlement; walkers join us when able. All you have to do is turn up. Most of our walks involve some ascents, apart from the winter months – there is also a PJPC Walking Group with a programme of more level routes. The meeting place is outside the Church in Brunstane Road North and we carshare to get to the start of the walks. You do not need your own transport to join us. Many of our walks start with coffee and a bacon roll en route.

Walkers should bring a packed lunch and suitable clothing for all seasons – including sturdy boots, thick socks, waterproof jacket and trousers and several layers of warm clothing. You must be prepared for all weather conditions in the mountains. If you have any questions, doubts or concerns, please ask us for advice.

The group walks at the pace of the slowest walker – we have a wide range of ability, age and experience on our walks – but please read the short descriptions of each walk to decide whether you feel confident with your own health and fitness or ask for more information. Each walker is responsible for their own personal safety and insurance since our group is not a formal organisation with its own liability insurance. Our walks are led by at least one experienced walker who is responsible for routes and navigation and carries only emergency first aid equipment, but there may not be a qualified Guide present. So that all walkers are safe and enjoy the walks, we ask walkers to respect the dynamic of the group, staying together unless letting the leader know you are leaving the group and taking responsibility for navigating and returning safely.
