information SERVICE DETAILS

Hospice care is not about a hospice building. Hospice care is about providing people with the very best care in the way that best suits their unique circumstances. Often that means us caring for people in their own communities and at home.

Continue to live independently

If it’s the right thing for you, our Community Palliative Care Team will help you manage your symptoms and provide you with access to the services you need to live well in your own home. Our multidisciplinary team of nurses, physiotherapists and occupational therapists provide outpatient consultations by phone and secure video conference. Working closely with your own GP, they ensure you and your family have all the support you need.

Our wellbeing service

Our wide range of supportive services are available to inpatients, outpatients and the wider community. From physiotherapy and counselling to family support and practical help at home, we have a service that is right for everyone.

Our wellbeing service offers support to make it easier to manage symptoms and enable you to live well with your condition. The service is available to inpatients, outpatients and those in the community.

Welcome to our wellbeing service

In April 2022, we proudly opened a new wellbeing service, responding to the changing needs of our hospice community. We believe in rehabilitative palliative care, empowering people to actively manage their conditions themselves, enabling them to live fully and enjoy the best quality of life possible.

It's a multi-disciplinary approach, with our whole team of specialists working together to provide care through in-patient beds, specialist out-patient clinics, in-person and virtual classes and wellbeing programmes. Our wellbeing service is free and open to all.

Access to wellbeing activities wherever you are

We offer interactive classes and self-management programmes, as well as Music, Art and Complementary Therapies as part of our wellbeing service. These are offered via our new wellbeing hub - bright studio space for in-person sessions, with virtual capabilities to reach people in the comfort of home. You can access the wellbeing hub online to find enjoyable classes, useful resources, relaxation activities and tips to help you cope and feel well.

Support for your loved ones...

One of the hardest things about illness is speaking to family and friends about what’s happening. Our Family Support Team can help make things a little easier. We organise support groups and provide various ways for you to engage with those closest to you. We can help you talk to children, offer general information and advice, and give support to those who are bereaved.

Helping creative expression and connection

The arts can bypass words. They can offer a creative outlet and support in times of change and loss. Our Arts team offers a range of sessions and projects using diverse arts media such as music and songwriting, painting, creative writing, photography and film making.

Helping you relax

Our complementary therapy service is available Monday to Friday, 10am to 4pm. Therapies for inpatients include reflexology, reiki, aromatherapy, massage and Indian Head massage. We also now provide virtual complementary therapies to outpatients in our community. These therapies are tailored to individual needs and offered together with conventional medical treatments to maximise wellbeing.

Helping you stay independent

An important part of living well with a palliative condition is minimising the effects of the condition and its symptoms, and finding ways to continue to participate in daily life.

Our Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy team can help you maintain your independence, and adjust to the physical and emotional changes that you may encounter as your condition progresses.

They can support you to learn techniques to manage symptoms such as breathlessness, fatigue, pain and anxiety, advise on assistive equipment, how to keep active, and help you continue to do the things that are important and meaningful to you.

Helping with the day-to-day

Our Social Workers will help you and those close to you with the practical tasks that need to be taken care of. We’ll help source practical help at home, point you towards advice on debt or income maintenance, help with housing, schools and employers, and offer social and emotional support. Whether you’re thinking about going home or moving to another care setting, our social workers are here for you.

Helping find peace of mind

We’re here to support your emotional and spiritual needs. Our counsellors offer a safe space to process what can be complex and overwhelming emotions. Our chaplaincy team offers support to those of all faiths and none, helping consider the biggest questions and talk about your life.

Accessing Hospice services...

We have a new Access Team, making our services available by phone and online to patients, families and health professionals Monday to Friday on 0131 551 7751 (9:00am - 4:00pm). Advice for health and social care professionals can be found at https://stcolumbashospice.org.uk/refer-a-patient.
