Covid-19 UPDATE...

Our Caern residential respite service for children with disabilities has had to make changes in the way the service is being run due to Covid-19. The staff teams are using the building in an innovative way, entering through one door to wash hands, get changed into scrubs and take their temperature, before heading into the main building.

The whole team at Caern have been keeping the young people busy making use of the local surroundings to go out on daily walks, and having lots of outdoor fun in the garden while the weather has been nice. The team have also faced many challenges as the young people are out of routine and structure, leading to behaviours that can be challenging. Managing this while adhering to government advice about PPE and social distancing can be difficult.

Service details...

Barnardo’s Caern provides residential overnight short breaks/outreach for children and young people who have been diagnosed with a Learning Disability and or Autism.

The Residential service is also available on a spot purchase basis, to children and young people who live within a reasonable driving distance. We also support families who wish to use their SDS budget to fund overnight respite.

We provide an overnight Short Break Service for children and young people as well as providing Emergency Short Breaks.

The young people attending Caern have a wide range of needs. Our client group is learning disabilities but within this we have children with high care needs, Autistic Spectrum Disorders, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Epilepsy and challenging behaviour.

Emergency Short Break Service...

This service is open to all individual families or local authorities. Emergency short break placements can be offered at short notice or can be planned to accommodate upcoming circumstances. Please contact the project for availability and rates.

Type of accommodation

The service is in the grounds of Trefoil in the Gogarbank area of Edinburgh and is open seven nights a week all year, with the exception of Christmas and New Year.

There are five single bedrooms available and a sixth which is used as an emergency bedroom. One of these bedrooms has an ensuite bathroom with a toilet and bath/shower.

The project has disabled access with a wet room and shower trolley. It also has another bathroom with a jacuzzi bath and sensory lights as well as a separate toilet. We also have hoists.

There is a large garden area and woodland walkway directly next to the project house for the young people to use. The garden has specialist equipment designed for use by the children who attend the project, and we also have a wildlife garden at the front.

Within the project we have a sensory room, as well as a play room and large circulation lounge, and a smaller TV lounge.

While the children are at Caern the staff arrange indoor activities such as arts and crafts, water play, baking and board games as well as DVDs. We also take them on outings in the community such as shopping centres, play parks, East Links animal farm, Gorgie farm and swimming.
