Covid-19 UPDATE...

Our service continues to provide emotional support, initially over the phone or through video calls. The emotional support has subsequently developed and increased into doorstep visits, garden visits and face-to-face contact.

Online Training

Our training with parents, carers, social workers, and other professionals on how to identify and respond to concerns of sexual abuse and exploitation has continued throughout lockdown. We are able to deliver online a virtual version of our training. These sessions have been reviewed and updated to incorporate the impact Covid-19 is having on children, young people and families in relation to sexual abuse and exploitation, harmful sexual behaviours and childhood adversity.

Service details...

Barnardo’s Early Intervention Service (BEIS) aims to support children, families and communities to recognise and understand the signs of child sexual exploitation, ensuring early identification of children vulnerable to child sexual exploitation (CSE).

The team also provides awareness training to professionals through a range of community events from briefing sessions to full training days supporting communities to better understand CSE and strategies to keep children and young people safe.

What is CSE?

Child sexual exploitation (CSE) happens when a young person is encouraged – or forced – to take part in sexual activity. It might be in exchange for presents, money, alcohol or simply emotional attention.

We are the largest provider of CSE support in the UK

We have been supporting sexually exploited children for more than 20 years. We reach out to young people at risk of or experiencing CSE and offer them confidential support in a safe environment, including:

- One-to-one counselling
- Group work and drop-in sessions
- Helping young people to report their experience and feel supported in the criminal justice system
- Raising awareness of CSE
- Running programmes in schools to help prevent CSE before it happens
- Training professionals and people in the community to spot the signs of CSE
- Campaigning for changes in the law to make it easier for abusers to be brought to justice
