New service for people living with dementia in Gilmerton

A new service to support people with dementia started last September at Gilmerton New Church on Ravenscroft Street. The Beacon Club, which has been running very successfully in Broomhouse for many years, provides food, friendship, and social activities for people with mild to medium cognitive impairments.

The service is open to anyone who has a or is waiting on a dementia diagnosis and attendees do not have to be referred by social work. People can self-refer or it can be done by friends and family members.

The new service offers day care to older people in general and those with mild cognitive impairment to mild / moderate dementia.

Our service aims to improve the quality of life for people who may be socially isolated and support them to live in their own homes for as long as possible.

Small groups of up to 10 people join us each day with refreshments offered on arrival and a choice of hot meals at lunchtime.

A blend of activities and outings are organised according to each group's preferences, abilities and needs.

Transport is provided with a trained escort, to and from the club.

Members make a small contribution to the weekly running costs of the service.

Monday - Thursday at Gilmerton New Church, EH17.

How do people access your service...

Can be referred by another professional or by family/friends. Please call the project manager to discuss.

If you would like to refer someone to attend The Beacon Club, contact Nancy Bryson nancy@spacescot.org or Karen Guthrie karen.guthrie@spacescot.org to register your interest. You can also call us on 0131 455 7731

Volunteer...

The service is still looking for volunteer support to help with all aspects of running the groups. If you are over 18 and free 9:00am-2:30pm Monday to Thursday and are friendly, understanding and have good communication and listening skills, then contact Nancy or Karen in the first instance. It’s a great way to boost your skills and give back to your local community.
