information DESCRIPTION

Music in Hospitals & Care (MiHC) brings interactive live music sessions to people who are receiving care or treatment in healthcare settings across the UK. We aim to make people feel good, one tune at a time.

MiHC is a UK charity, founded in 1948. Our live musical sessions are designed to humanise clinical settings, to reach and connect people, to encourage communication and meaningful interactions and to elicit emotions and memories when it matters most.

We organise around 4,500 music sessions a year for people of all ages receiving care or treatment for an illness or disability. Our professional musicians visit hospitals, hospices, care homes, day centres, special schools and community settings. Every session is unique and tailored to meet the needs of each audience group.

We have offices in England, Scotland and Wales and over 450 musicians spread far and wide across the country. Together, and thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we are able to bring the benefits of engagement with live music to over 100,000 people in care each year.

Local Impact

We’re proud to share our year in numbers for 2017/18. We’ve been making music from Shetland and the Outer Isles down to the Borders and Stranraer - and everywhere in between.

Who we support

A Music in Hospitals & Care performance lasts just over an hour, but our musicians provide more than just live music. They will arrive in good time for their performance, allowing time to meet their audience, and will stay to chat with audience members about the kind of day they have had or the memories the music has sparked. This is particularly welcomed by patients who have little contact with relatives or friends.

Like all individuals, the people who access and benefit from our service are unique. They have a wide variety of healthcare conditions, needs and access many different types of support. Therefore, it’s difficult for us to succinctly categorise the audiences that we reach.
