information DESCRIPTION

Leith School of Art is an independent art school based in Leith on the North side of Edinburgh.

Leith School of Art is a college where everyone is welcome to come and study art. Our tailored approach to teaching means we offer something to suit each person who comes to us. From full-time, year-long courses to short courses and workshops that last just a few hours and offer a taste of what it is like to work in an art school environment, we have something that will appeal to everyone across a wide range of subjects. We believe that everybody has a creative side, and we delight in helping people find, develop and enjoy their creative gifts.

There are many things about Leith School of Art that are unique. We offer something special to everyone who comes to us, and we take pride in our reputation for offering high-quality art education for all.

Leith School of Art operates across two campuses - North Junction Street and St James.

North Junction Street Campus

Our North Junction Street campus is housed in a Norwegian Seaman’s Church. The building has a distinctive feel that sustains a balance between its history and the transformation required to adapt the spaces for their current use, which includes four multi-purpose studios. The building has some areas flooded with light while others are more atmospheric. It is a special environment, which lends itself ideally to the creative process.

St James Campus

Our St James campus is in St James Church off Leith Links. It is a lovely 1930s church hall with two spacious studio spaces and an outdoor area.

Students work in a number of open-plan studios, each equipped with easels, drawing boards, tables and small tools. The School provides core materials including paper, charcoal and pencils, inks, paints - oil and acrylic - and pastels. Core materials are included in the course fees.

Printmaking students have access to printing presses for monoprinting, and other techniques and we have a range of screens for screenprinting. We also have a selection of hand and power tools for general use and a range of sewing machines for working with textiles and other material.

In addition to the School's own facilities, there are many high quality resources around Edinburgh, including galleries and museums. All students have access to our own library of art books but, if resident in Edinburgh, they can also access the comprehensive Art and Design Library provided by the City of Edinburgh Council.

The School has a Mac and PC computer suite with facilities for printing and photocopying, digital cameras and data projectors.

Throughout the day and evening coffee and tea are provided, and there is a small kitchen with a fridge, kettle and microwave ovens for preparing food. Coffee and lunch breaks are a great opportunity to meet and socialise with fellow students.
